Three Situations From Grace and Frankie Where Caregivers Could Help
Have you seen Grace and Frankie yet? It is a Netflix show about two older women who have been part of each others’ lives for two decades. Their husbands work for the same law firm, though Grace (Jane Fonda) is a polar opposite to Frankie (Lily Tomlin). The women happen to be complete opposites and are definitely not from the same social circles, but they’re united when their husbands reveal they’re in love and want a divorce.
This comedy poses some real situations that seniors face. It also highlights situations where caregivers would really be useful. Here are some of the circumstances where seniors would benefit from a caregiver’s services.
Failing the Driving Test.
After her license expires, Frankie goes to take the test again and fails it once, twice, and a third time. When her sons try to help her study, they realize that her memory is sliding. They sit her down and explain that with her memory issues, driving simply isn’t a safe option. Frankie’s response is that her sons want her to become a recluse.
Vision changes, slower reaction times, and joint pain can all make it hard to drive a car. When it’s not safe, it’s best to give up the car keys. With that, Frankie didn’t have to immediately feel that she’d become a recluse. Home care services include transportation. Frankie could have her ex-husband cover the cost of having a caregiver to drive her to stores, appointments, and restaurants.
Recovery After a Major Surgery.
After Grace’s ex-husband has a heart attack, he undergoes a surgery. Once at home, he’s supposed to take it easy. He’s a very difficult patient, however. He hides his cigars and snacks on fatty cheese sticks when no one is around.
With a caregiver in the house to monitor his movements, there would have been someone to lift items, help him get out of a chair, and eat the right foods. Caregivers can prepare healthy meals, carry in groceries and packages, and help with transfers from the bed, in and out of the shower, or off a chair or sofa.
Help With Housekeeping.
Grace is very tidy. Frankie is okay being messy. This is one area where they get frustrated. Grace wants dishes washed, dried, and put away. Frankie is okay letting dishes sit in the sink for a day. Caregivers can help with light housekeeping and laundry duties.
Home care services don’t take away from independence or privacy. Caregivers come when they’re needed. Your mom and dad are able to live in their home and get help on a schedule that they designate. They gain companionship, help with activities of daily living, and peace of mind.
