Summer Vacation Ideas for Caregivers
If you are the family caregiver for an aging loved one, you might be thinking that a family vacation this summer is too much work. There is too much to think about, too much to plan, too much to do that isn’t just enjoying yourself… it just isn’t worth the time.
This couldn’t be further from the truth!
As a caregiver, you, more than anyone, are entitled to a vacation, and family vacations are the best vacations of all. If you have an aging loved one in your care, there is no reason why they can’t come along on your family vacations. You might have to make a few adjustments, and you might have to ask the rest of the family to pitch in and help, but in the end it will all be worth it.
Here are some vacation destinations and ideas that are accessible to anyone, of any mobility level. Choose one that seems to fit with your family’s needs and interests, and then go prove to yourself that family vacations are not a thing of the past!
- Theme parks – Not all rides are suitable for the elderly or infirm. But, most theme parks have many attractions that aren’t rides, like games and food stands that can be just as fun for everyone. Maybe you and the kids can ride a rollercoaster while your spouse and mother try out all the good snacks at the concession stands. Or maybe you can all watch people come over the waterfall on the water ride and laugh at their expressions while dodging the waves in the splash zone. Theme parks are often noted for their handicap accessibility, so you should have no trouble making your aging loved one comfortable while they are there.
- Zoos – Zoos are also very accessible, and often have wheelchairs or other similar equipment for rent if you don’t have your own. The whole family can enjoy looking at all the animals, and just spending the day together. This can be a great way to foster family unity, and there is no end to the fun you can have at a zoo.
- The beach – Walking on the sand at the beach may present a bit of trouble for your aging loved one, but once you help them get situated, everyone can spend the day watching the ocean as you lounge on the beach. Just remember to use sunscreen, and use it often!
- Picnics – If you don’t have the resources or the will to go on a big vacation or road trip, a picnic can be a great alternative. Just pack a lunch and head to the local park, where you can either eat at a picnic table or spread a blanket on the ground. When lunch is over, you can all take a stroll around the park, or just watch the kids play on the swing set.
No matter where you decide to go, a family vacation is a great way to make sure that your aging loved one still feels included. Be patient with everyone, and be kind, and you will all have a great time!
