How Can Lack of Mobility Affect Your Aging Adult at Home?
It’s important to look at your senior’s mobility, but having problems with mobility doesn’t mean that your senior can’t live on their own any longer.
Bathing and Using the Toilet.
Bathing and using the toilet are two of the most personal tasks your senior might engage in on a daily basis. Stiff muscles, poor flexibility, and simply being unable to handle these tasks on her own can leave her feeling awful emotionally as well as physically. Just a little bit of assistance can change all of that, though.
Dressing Herself and Performing Other Grooming Tasks.
Other grooming tasks, such as washing and brushing her hair or getting dressed, can become difficult for your senior, too. If she isn’t able to lift her arms the way that she needs to, then it’s going to be really tough to keep up with hygiene the way that she has in the past.
Light Housekeeping.
Taking care of her home may have been a source of pride for your senior. Light housekeeping tasks, like dusting or vacuuming, are dangerous if your aging family member isn’t able to walk easily. She might have balance issues that make cleaning even more difficult for her to accomplish.
Grocery Shopping and Cooking.
Going to the grocery store takes a lot more time and energy than most people think about until it’s difficult to do those things easily. Having mobility issues can also make your elderly family member feel uncomfortable being out and about in public. Once she gets home, finding the energy to keep up with cooking for herself may be more than she has the strength to handle on a daily basis.
Driving to Appointments.
You might not realize this, but mobility problems can affect your senior’s ability to drive, too. She may not be able to twist and turn to see over her shoulders. She also may not be able to control the car if her muscles are weaker than they’ve been in the past. Finding someone else, such as elder care providers, to take over the driving allows her to continue to go where she needs to go.
Hindered mobility doesn’t have to mean that your senior is unable to live on her own or that she can’t remain as independent as possible. She can accept help from you and from elder care providers with the tasks and issues that cause her the greatest trouble. She can still live a full and happy life, even with mobility that is not what it used to be.
