Five Tips for Keeping Your Senior's Bedroom Safe and Ready for Sleep
Much of the time that your elderly family member spends in her bedroom might find her drowsy or groggy, which can be a prime cause of falling. She also needs to be able to get some sleep there, so the room has a lot of requirements.
She’s Got Safety Tools at the Ready.
If your senior doesn’t already have a decent-sized bedside table, it might be time to put one in place. This gives your senior somewhere to keep her flashlight, any medications she needs by her bed, and her phone and emergency contact list. Other things that your senior might need or want near the bed could include a night light, a bedside toilet, and remotes for lighting or ceiling fans.
Cords and Clutter Are Banished.
Any form of clutter can be a massive tripping hazard, especially when your senior is a little less steady on her feet. Cords in particular can be a big problem, so it’s important to push them safely back out of the way. Be careful not to put furniture directly on any cords, though, because that can cause damage to the cord and possibly create a fire hazard.
Throw Rugs and Carpets Are Secure.
If there are any throw rugs, carpets, or even bare flooring in your senior’s bedroom, be sure to check that they’re secure and not likely to trip your elderly family member. Anything that could cause her to lose her balance or fall could create big problems for her.
She’s Able to Maneuver Around Furniture.
Smaller bedrooms can get complicated because it’s more awkward to easily maneuver around furniture. Look at how you can arrange the furniture so that it gives your elderly family member the most room to get around safely in. This might mean getting creative with some of the pieces. If she uses a cane or other assistive devices, make sure you keep those needs in mind.
Light and Temperature Are Easy to Adjust.
When it comes to getting quality sleep, your elderly family member needs to be able to control the lighting and the temperature in the room easily. This might mean installing blackout curtains, using a motion-activated night light, and being sure that there’s a ceiling fan or some other type of fan in the room.
If you’re still not sure whether your elderly family member’s bedroom is set up properly for her needs, you might want to consider working with home care providers. They can help you to determine what exactly your elderly family member needs and whether changes would help get closer to that goal.
