What Signs Could Be Warning You that Your Loved One Is Developing Dementia?
Although there are some common signs of the beginning stages of dementia, your best option is to take your concerns to your loved one’s doctor so that you can get a complete and accurate diagnosis. From there you can develop a care plan for your loved one.
Increasing Confusion
Your loved one may start to experience greater confusion about where she is or what day or time of day it is. For example, you may have home care providers coming in every Tuesday, but your loved one thinks that yesterday was Tuesday and doesn’t understand why her senior care provider is here today. This can especially be troubling if your loved one still drives and loses track of where she’s going or where she is.
Losing Items and Memory Loss
It’s also common for your loved one to start misplacing items or forgetting where she left them. Everyone forgets things now and again, but your loved one might find it difficult to hang onto even the simplest pieces of information.
Trouble Performing Familiar Tasks
If there is a task that your loved one has performed for years, such as making a specific recipe from memory, she may suddenly have difficulty with that task. Your loved one may find a combination of factors contributing to the situation, such as memory issues that become worse in correlation with vision trouble or trouble hearing properly.
Declining Judgment
You may start to notice that your loved one is making some decisions that don’t make sense or that don’t seem like decisions she ever would have made previously. These problem decisions can put your loved one into dangerous situations that make you worry about leaving her on her own.
Mood and Personality Changes
In the beginning stages of dementia, your loved one may seem to have mood shifts and even personality changes. These can be startling and even disturbing depending on the extent of the changes you’re seeing.
Your loved one’s doctor can help you to narrow down a cause for all these changes so that you and your loved one know what you’re up against.
