Having a Plan, even if Home Care Isn’t Needed Just Yet
You and your spouse have reached retirement. You worked hard, planned properly, and feel financially secure for your retired life. You and she are planning to travel and do the things you couldn’t do in your younger years. You don’t know how long you’ll live, but your family history is quite positive. You have a good insurance plan to make sure one of you is taken care of in the event you lose the other. One thing you might not have thought about just yet, though, is planning for the potential need for home care services.
Why most people overlook home care services.
Unfortunately, people don’t really want to think about their future in a negative light. They want to think about traveling, spending time with family, visiting their adult children and grandchildren, and so much more. They waited most of their adult life, working tirelessly to save money, so they can enjoy these Golden Years.
Who wants to think about the prospect of facing a medical emergency, injuries, or something else that leaves them struggling to take care of themselves, even if it’s only for a couple of weeks or a few months, at home? Not many people want to even think about those things. It’s one of the reasons why so few even consider any type of long-term care insurance.
A plan is a good idea.
Even though you might be completely healthy, strong, and confident in your future, things can change in an instant. You could be walking down the stairs tomorrow, carrying a basket of laundry, and slip. You can tumble, break your hip, and spend months trying to recuperate and then regain mobility and strength.
We really don’t know what the future will bring.
That’s why it’s so important to develop a plan in the event home care support is needed. Would you prefer to remain at home or do you want to go to a nursing home? Most people will readily admit they want to remain at home, if at all possible.
Sometimes the only way that’s going to be possible is to either have an incredible support system of family members and friends, and neighbors, or to realize the value of experienced home care aides, visiting nurses, and other caregivers.
What you should do right now is begin developing a plan. That doesn’t mean you’re going to require home care in the future, but when you do, understand about availability and cost, and know what it’s all about, you can step into your future with even more confidence than you already have.
